The symbol is intended to easily <strong>identify foods high in<\/strong> nutrients of public health concern, i.e., <strong>saturated fat<\/strong>, <strong>sugars<\/strong> and <strong>sodium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The symbol must be shown in black and white, generally in the upper half of the packaging\u2019s front panel so that it is clearly visible. However, on horizontal packaging, the symbol must be shown in the right half.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dark_blue_title\">Why?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A diet high in sugars, sodium and saturated fat is a <strong>MAJOR RISK FACTOR<\/strong> for obesity, heart disease and diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>The countdown has begun. While new in Canada, several countries have already been using similar symbols to help their populations improve their eating habits.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, <strong>Chile<\/strong> was the first country in the Western Hemisphere to implement mandatory front-of-pack nutrition labelling.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, <strong>Israel<\/strong>, <strong>Perou<\/strong>, <strong>Mexico<\/strong>, <strong>Uruguay<\/strong>, <strong>Brazil<\/strong>, <strong>Argentina<\/strong> have advanced similar labelling.<\/p>\n<p>Voluntary front-of-pack nutrition labelling is also in place in <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong>, <strong>France<\/strong>, <strong>Australia<\/strong> and <strong>New Zealand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dark_blue_title\">Impact<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Studies conducted in 2020, estimated that the front-of-pack nutrition symbols contributed to <strong>declines of 37% of sodium<\/strong> purchased and <strong>27% of sugar<\/strong> purchased in Chili.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>New-Zealand,<\/strong> the voluntary <em>Pick the Tick<\/em> program succeeded in the <strong>removal of 33 tons of salt <\/strong>from the food supply <strong>over the course of a year <\/strong>through product reformulation.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Finland<\/strong>, a warning label is required on products high in salt, since the early 1990s. Since implementation of the warning, along with other related policies, the <strong>salt content <\/strong>of studied foods has <strong>decreased by 20-25% <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dark_blue_title\">What next?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Spark your creativity!
