In Canada, 7.5% of people report having food allergies (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/allergen-nce.ca\/about\/\">The Allergy, Genes and Environment Network<\/a><\/em>). A food allergy is a reaction of the immune system that occurs after consuming a certain food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A person can be allergic or intolerant to any type\nof food. However, certain allergens are more common than others. Health Canada has\nestablished the following foods as <strong>priority\nallergens<\/strong> and of public health concern: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Eggs<\/li><li>Milk<\/li><li>Seafood\n(fish, shellfish, crustaceans)<\/li><li>Soy<\/li><li>Peanuts<\/li><li>Tree\nnuts (almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pine\nnuts, pistachios or walnuts)<\/li><li>Sesame<\/li><li>Wheat\nand other gluten sources (barley, oats, rye, triticale)<\/li><li>Mustard<\/li><li>Sulphites<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Proper\nlabelling of allergens on prepackaged food products is essential to allergic\nindividuals, as allergic reactions can develop quickly and can be severe,\nsometimes deadly. For the protection of those suffering from food allergies,\nthe government of Canada adopted, in February 2011 and December 2016 modifications\nto the <em>Food and Drug Regulations<\/em> to\nenhance the labelling of food allergens, gluten sources and added sulphites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Failure to declare a priority allergen is one of the <strong>major causes of food product recalls<\/strong>. Whenever a food product is recalled from the marketplace, a public warning is issued and information related to the recall is posted on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inspection.gc.ca\/about-the-cfia\/newsroom\/food-recall-warnings\/eng\/1299076382077\/1299076493846\">Canadian Food Inspection Agency website<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthycanadians.gc.ca\/recall-alert-rappel-avis\/index-eng.php?cat=1\">Government of Canada\u2019s website<\/a>.
